“Hurry, bird!” said the horse, who had been keeping watch. “Hurry! Before he falls asleep!”

The bird took wing and perched on a branch of a berry bush above the reclining form of the giant bear. She was very nervous, but she tried not to show it.

“Oh, great, giant creature,” said the bird, “May I ask you a small question?”

The bear gazed up at the bird and let out a huge yawn. His great sharp teeth and enormous tongue were stained blue from all the berries he had eaten.

“Certainly, little flying turtle,” said the bear. “I enjoy a little after-dinner conversation. Or is this after-breakfast conversation? Never mind. Ask away.”

“Have you heard or seen anything of a brightly colored fish that swam through this way?” asked the bird.

“A brightly colored fish?” asked the bear.

“Yes, sir,” said the bird.

“Speckled, like a trout?”

“Not speckled, sir,” said the bird. “She has broad bands of color, like the rainbow. Colors that seem to shift and shimmer as she swims about.”

“A rainbow trout, do you mean?” asked the bear.

“Not a trout of any kind, I think,” said the bird.

“Hmmmm,” said the bear. “I’m afraid I cannot help you. I have not seen any such fish. I suggest you ask a trout, though. They know the most about what is in the water and what isn’t.”

“Where might we find a trout?” asked the bird.

“Follow this stream down a little way,” said the bear, “until it meets up with the creek that comes down off the mountain. After the two waters meet there is a small set of rapids. The trout usually spend their summers in those rapids.”

“Thank you very much!” said the bird. “And good day to you!”

“Good day to you, little flying turtle!” said the bear. “Stop by here again if you should return this way. I always enjoy a good talk.”
